The Light Phone
A mobile phone with low-end technology has big ambitions, or it is not a very smart device.
It’s low expectations for what capabilities it should have never stopped people from becoming interested in it.
Ever since the release of its first model in spring 2017, Light Phone has reformatted and moved into the future with a whole new look and feel. Their phones are now shaped like business cards for ease of use, lightweight and look like they’re from another era.
A minimalist phone that provided just a single button, the G1 was perfect for the man who wants all of his devices to do one thing, as Joe and Kai said when they launched it.
You could only make calls and nothing else, since it didn’t have a keyboard or a contact list. When you do make calls though, the Light’s performance is stellar! Its crowdfunding campaign managed to raise over five million dollars on Kickstarter, and it has been wildly popular ever since.
The waiting list was at 50,000 people and the lucky phone draw occurred. The reports marked 15,000 phones shipped.
The Light Phone 2 was designed from the ground up to be upgradable and expandable with a user-shaped vocabulary, a customisable interface, and the ability to keep all your phone numbers saved text, play music and support some apps.
The Light Phone 2 burst onto the crowdfunding front and quickly became one of the most successful Indiegogo campaigns. It raised over $3 million and an investor finally bought it.
And now it’s ready to go on the market, at $350 now, where the first one only had $150. Weighing only 78 grams it will launch in two colors (black and light gray). The model will have a 2.84-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth and a battery that supports 2 hours of talk time. It even supports USB functions now.
It will have just 3 functions when it hits the market. In the functions includes calls, text messages, and alarms. It will release a few other tools later; maps, music and other utilities. It won’t have apps or web browsing like some of the newer devices on the market, but all of its resources are free (unlike some newer devices).
It’s perfect for a second phone or an occasional break from the digital grind. You may want to take this with you on trips where you need a reminder that technology shouldn’t be your everything.
