New era of communication
Google Translate features hundreds of languages, but did not support sign language. Sign language can be difficult to learn, but Google’s research team has built an AI to help with that. It can interpret what you’re doing and then turn it all into speech!
In theory, an app on your phone would allow people with speech problems to communicate more easily with those who don’t know sign language. This would be achieved through the use of a camera, which would map and translate hand movements.
One of the best benefits of AI powered speech generation for mobile devices is that it is done in real time, demonstrating just how powerful these devices have become. A few years ago, such technology would have required powerful desktop computers.
So far, the technology has yet to be perfected. This is due to many factors like perfecting facial expression recognition and interpreting sign languages of different countries.
“We’re going to make this technology more reliable with better detection. We also give you a wider range of signatures to detect and work more quickly on dynamic motions. We believe that releasing this technology will spur on new ideas and applications from people in the field of research and development” states the company’s representative.
Gather more information. We are entering into the new era of communication.
