The National Network of Infrastructures for Research and Technology – Hellas (EDYTE S.A.), belonging to the Ministry of Digital Governance, has upgraded the Internet by announcing the launch of GR-IX::Athens.
GR-IX is the Hellenic Internet Exchange, a national infrastructure that ensures neutrality and independence in the very operation of the Internet. Its mission is to facilitate the exchange of internet traffic in Greece and accelerate its growth. It is a hub that enables Internet service providers communicate with each other. Content and cloud services providers can communicate as well. It has two independent islands, with a total of 4 POPs and 119 Ports, connecting 53 members in Athens. Accordingly, GR-IX::Thessaloniki connects 21 members in the co-capital city.
In order to facilitate internet traffic, the company installled an Internet Exchange Point (IXP), a network facility that enables the interconnection of more than two independent Autonomous Systems.
The upgraded platform is based on EVPN/VXLAN architecture. It can connect to it with 1Gbps, 10Gbps, 100Gbps, or multiples of these ports. Finally, the interconnection capacity of the platform PoPs has noted an upgrade, currently exceeding 1.7 Tbps.
