.org and .charity domains are sold

The Public Interest Registry is responsible for domains like .org and .charity. They were sold to a company that, naturally, plans to make money off it.

Ethos Capital now owns an organization that was previously owned by civic non-profits. Instead of donating directly to charities, Ethos Capital has its own goals to achieve.

A non profit organization is starting to act like a business in areas such as their use of the internet to engage with customers.

The .org extensions were also the alternative to .com, which signify commercial entities. That is not all, as recently ICANN, the non-profit organisation that oversees all Internet addresses, agreed to remove the price cap on .org extensions which used to be limited at $7. It will now cost up to $1 million in some cases.

Online domains are a luxury many people dream of. Although it is not yet clear how much the prices for these online addresses will increased, it is, however, significant that PIR itself had commented that “we have no plans to increase .org prices.”
