Kaspersky Lab’s experts predictions
Despite the increase in complex DDoS attacks, the number of generalised attacks have decreased. Their work has begun to be broken down by country.
Q1 2017 confirmed Kaspersky Lab’s experts’ predictions for the evolution of DDoS attacks. This also proves that digital criminals also need a rest. In the first quarter marked the increased popularity of complex DDoS attacks. There was a noticeable decrease, though, in the number of generalised attacks.
Kaspersky DDoS Intelligence has seen a significant decline in malicious DDoS attacks. The Netherlands and the UK replace Japan and France in the list of the 10 countries with the most victims of DDoS attacks.
South Korea has remained the number one choice for cybercriminals when it comes to C&C servers. The U.S. has an increase in the number of servers, followed by the Netherlands, which is a new top 3 leader because China fell from first place.China dropped from second to seventh place. Japan, Ukraine and Bulgaria are no longer in the top ten countries with the highest number of detected C&C servers. Hong Kong, Romania and Germany replaced them.
In Q1, Windows-based botnets expanded hugely while Linux-based botnets shrank. These results show how the breakdown of user systems. The number of attacks from TCP, UDP and ICMP increased significantly in Q1 2017. However, the share of SYN DDoS and HTTP attacks fell from 75% to 48%.
The number of attacks occurred during this period are in decline, but so are the volume calling for encryption-based services. The increased use of DDoS attacks have shown to be a shift from more complex to simpler but still effective ones. In response to this, many established security systems are lacking the skills necessary to detect such attacks.
Q1 2017 was relatively quiet in comparison to last quarter, with a max of 994 attacks. The longest attack recorded in Q1 amounted to 120 hours, significantly less compared to the 292 hours seen in Q4 2016.
