As weird as it sounds, loneliness has plagued seafarers nearly as much as in the past according to a recent British survey.

A study led by Professor Helen Samson found that lack of internet access in ocean spaces can cause voyages to be delayed and rescheduled Some of the reasons that migrant workers often find themselves in long periods away from friends and family, or living and eating conditions on board are some of the main problems.

Ship workers can suffer from serious mental disorders due to the intense stress working on tumultuous shifts can cause. Still, boat owners are not doing enough to help their employees recover with effective psychological care.

Apart from the hazards of being out at sea, the workloads can add annoyance. They might feel it’s a perfect time to let oneself go wild with alcohol intake or provide up some new ventures. “As your divorce rate from a traditional marriage is only 9%, you’re not going to be able to spend more time with your kids if you don’t get yourself some more time off.” For many people, three months’ time is simply not enough.

According to Samson, being able to remain hidden from workplace problems allows abuse against seafarers to go unchecked. In contrast, many employers mistreat seafarers by not providing them with hospitable conditions that keep their mental health in good condition.

A new study suggests that shipping companies should take psychological support of their seafarers more seriously to avoid the development of anxiety disorders and depression in them.

One of the most important measures proposed are the provision of free internet, improved accommodation and food, the availability of recreational activities, regular leave and etc.
