
The world’s most powerful supercomputers
The new list of the world’s 500 most powerful supercomputers, which has just been released, confirms that the top spot belongs to the US. But China has more supercomputers than the US.
Summit was built by IBM and is installed at the U.S Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It has 122.3 petaflops. Chinese Sunway TaihuLight is in second place and is installed at the National Supercomputing Center in Gusi and has a capacity of 93 petaflops. Third is the American Sierra at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, also of the US Department of Energy. It has a power output of 71.6 petaflops and is an IBM creation.
Lenovo is the world’s largest supercomputer manufacturer and has created all 122 systems in the Top 500 (24%). HPE, Inspur, Cray and Sugon are following.
