Attacks with cryptomining software
Currencies and new technologies are getting more common, so much so that cybercriminals can use them to make money. Ever since cryptocurrencies like bitcoin have been around for a while, online attacks have increased rapidly. There is a chance that you run the risk of criminals targeting you. Criminals that want to steal cryptocurrencies or degrade the overall functionality of websites that are acting as stores for cryptocurrency information. Hackers infected computers of computer users that visit their websites. This malware secretly consumes computing power to perform cryptocurrency mining.
Researchers recently uncovered a huge amount of data from on-going cyberattacks. These attacks are affecting over 4 thousand high-traffic sites, including those of government agencies. The most alarming network attack to come out of this hack is the one that compromised sites like the UK’s NHS, US government’s digital court system, and Student Loans.
Additionaly, red flags have been raised over a hitherto unknown security hole in the widespread Browsealoud plugin, which helps visually impaired people to convert the text of pages into an audio file. The hackers used coinhive to attack the processing power of visitors to the pages.
Most of the issues have been cleared and the creators of Browsealoud and the website administrators were quick to find a solution. This is not the first nor the last e-currency mining attack we have seen. With the rise of cryptocurrencies, these attacks will become more rampant in growth.
