Tim Cook asks for control of data
On Thursday, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook urged the US Congress to give consumers the right to control and delete personal data collected from the Internet. Apple as a company sets itself apart in many ways, but the privacy of their data is one way they prosper. Cook explains how privacy is valuable, one of their selling points for purchasing an Apple device.
Apple reiterated this policy with a big advertising banner at the World Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The famous Las Vegas slogan paraphrased by Apple continued to be “What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone.”
Tim Cook recently recommended the development of a new law that would allow consumers to get rid of personal data online on demand.
The internet giants are all getting rich from the information they collect from their users. These companies will certainly not receive well the call by the head of Apple. Considering this, they have done nothing but exploit their users for profit for years.
“A federal privacy law should aim to give control of the data to the consumer. The law should also permit to reveal those who sell our data secretly,” Cook stressed.
The US Consumer Protection Commission will have to set up a data exchange platform on which businesses the trade registration is necessary. This new system would allow consumers to monitor their transactions, customer by customer. They can decide whether they intend to give them the ability to “delete them after ordering, free, easy, over the Internet, and once and for all.”
“In 2019, it’s time to stand up for the right to privacy. Your privacy, mine, the world’s,” Tim Cook notes in Time.
“Consumers should no longer have to endure companies irresponsibly aggregating user profiles. Data leaks seem out of control, and there’s an increasing inability to control our digital lives,” he lamented.
“Technology has the potential to transform the world for the better. It will never, though, achieve that world without the trust of the citizens it serves.”
