Toshiba will no longer make laptops

Toshiba has announced that it will stop investing in the digital space and focus on traditional products, such as laptops and personal computers.

Japanese company Toshiba has sold their shares in personal computer company Dynabook. This means that Toshiba, which is known for using digital technologies, will no longer be connected in any way to the manufacturer of personal computers.

When Sharp acquired Toshiba’s PC division, it also bought out the remaining shares of the company. The acquisition cost $36 million and has now paid off in dividends.

Toshiba launched its first laptop in 1985 and has released many generations of laptops since. Today, Toshiba releases laptops of all sizes, including one from their latest range which is 5 pounds lighter than the heavy-duty models T1100 was at launch. Since the beginning, these laptops have been produced with 3.5-inch floppy disks.

The Toshiba laptop was the first computer to be released in Europe, which helped it rise in popularity with consumers. That success allowed them to promote this model in American and Asian markets. Incidentally, Toshiba also announced that it was a pioneer in the launch of DVD players in 1996.

By 2011, Toshiba had sold 17M computers and laptops. This is until the company ceased to sell in the European market. They posted a loss of $318M at that time and pulled out of most other markets as well.
