The protagonists are not only physical stores but even more often online stores. Google offers tips to help grocery shoppers find safe and secure products on the internet. It is crucial that you do not forget these important tips when shopping.
Rather than staying with traditional brick and mortar stores, people are now using the internet for shopping. Google has made online shop safe by providing tips and tricks so you don’t waste your time or money. All you need to do to make sure a website is secure. Always, as recommended, check the address bar or search for “https://” in the URL bar. You need to see a lock icon especially if you need to provide sensitive data. Always be careful at sites where you use data such as your credit card number or bank account number.

Google’s “Safe Browsing” technology alerts you when you’re about to visit suspicious sites. These sites may contain dangerous threats, such as malware and phishing attacks. Most browsers use this technology and it can prevent unwanted threats when visiting certain websites. More than 4 million devices worldwide already use it and will continue to grow in popularity in the future. Threats like those found on websites such as Chrome and Firefox, as well as apps like Safari and iOS.
- Search for product comparison websites where you can compare prices of products. If the price of the product is significantly cheaper than those of the similar items, take a closer look at it. If you’re buying locally or on a site you don’t know, it’s best to do some research around the seller and ask about the condition of the item. If it’s your first time there, ask them what they think about the items condition or take photos in case there is any damage that comes with your purchase.

- If a site asks you for personal information that is not necessary for the purchase of a product or service (e.g. your bank account details, answers to security questions or a password), it should be avoided as such items are typically always signs of something suspicious. Many fraudulent sites look exactly like official sites. Fraudsters frequently set up sites only to steal your personal data so they can spam it.
- Be careful not to store sensitive information in any shared computers. If you have to work on a computer with your financial data, be sure to log out after use and close the browser window afterwards.
