It hs become the No. 1 iPhone app in the US. The platform has now surpassed 1 billion downloads. By all account is one of the most popular social networking and video-sharing platforms at the moment. TikTok acts as social media, allowing users to share videos covering a multitude of categories. It was one of the earliest apps to gain such a high number of downloads, surpassing 100 million in June 2018 alone.

But what exactly is it?

It’s a product of a Chinese company, ByteDance. It emerged a few years ago in Beijing and conquered the local market by running several well-known social networking apps in China. “Chinese Facebook” is what they call it. Zhang Yiming founded ByteDance and acted as part-time general manager. Now the platform’s value is over $75 billion.

TikTok first started as Douyin, an app to quickly and easily share short videos. It already has over 100 million users worldwide within a year, meaning September of 2016.

TikTok’s original name was Douyin. Founders renamed it for the sake of gaining worldwide popularity. Now that Douyin has been acquired by a company from the US. TikTok is taking over and seems to be gaining traction at an unstoppable rate, especially since it was sold for $1 billion.
