Connecting to public WiFi
Using 3G or 4G data is the most suitable means of connection, but sometimes the mobile phone signal doesn’t help, so a public WiFi is the only solution.
If you following the steps suggested by ESET, you can choose the most reliable and secure hotspot.
- Check the authenticity of the network before you connect. Don’t connect to any network called “Free WiFi”. Mark James, Security Specialist at ESET, states: “If it’s a shared place (cafeteria, McDonalds, etc.), ask a member of staff for the correct WiFi name – don’t just connect to the first network you see.”
- After connecting to a public hotspot make sure that sharing mode is turned off.
- Make sure to check that HTTPS is enabled. If you have to connect to a corporate environment, use a VPN.
- Do not use financial and personal data
- Prefer to view email and facebook from your computer. Mark James, ESET Security Specialist, says: “Personally I would limit my activities to anything that doesn’t require a username and password to log in, but bear in mind that most apps on a smartphone will log in automatically.”
- In remote areas, it’s normal to come across WiFi networks with no security. Don’t connect to these hotspots, warns ESET’s Mark James: “There will be access to your data by opportunists and you won’t even know it.”
- Lastly, make sure to carefully inspect the list of known networks on your smart device.
