ΑΜ Turing Award

MIT professor Tim Berners Lee recieved “the Nobel Prize in Computer Science”, otherwise known as the AM Turing Award. He received this honour after creating the World Web, a network of websites. With the ability of all of which to link to one another, any site can pull information from any other site.

According to reports, Berners-Lee has won Google’s top award. The MIT News website notes that he will be given a million dollar prize for his “invention of the World Wide Web, the first web browser, and fundamental protocols and algorithms so vital to the Internet’s global ecosystem.” This year is the 50th anniversary of this award.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s a senior researcher at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). With an additional position in the Department of Electrical Engineering, conceived the idea of the WWW in as a way for scientists around the world to share information on the Internet. He created a naming convention (URL), a language for creating web pages (HTML) and a communications protocol (HTTP). His open-sourced approach with the first browser and server considers to be the driving force behind it.

Berners Lee said that he received the award with honour, an award given in the past to milestone minds. Being the founder and director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), he aims to establish the open Web as a public good and a basic right. The aim is to set technical standards for Web development. He is also a professor at Oxford and directs the Decentralized Information Group at CSAIL. Having developed systems like HTTPA, they help people on the internet transfer data with as little interference as possible. They can, hence, monitor personal data accurately. He also heads an initiative called “Solid” (social linked data), which is trying to change the Web and make it less centralized. Users will have more control over their data, and can only make it available to the applications that they want.

He has received accolades and recognitions. Furthermore, Queen Elizabeth II made him a knight. He appeared in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most important people of the 20th century. The Turing Prize will  receive officially on 24th of June.
