Neon Lights patent | Techday, January 19th
Inventor Georges Claude filed for the patent of the neon lighting tube on this TECHDAY, on January 19th 1915. Neon lighting consists of brightly glowing, electrified sealed glass tubes or bulbs that contain rarefied neon or other gases. In the U.S. patent issued, the French inventor was covering the design of the electrodes for neon lights; this patent became the strongest basis for the monopoly held in the U.S. by his company, Claude Neon Lights, in the early 1930s. Neon tubes were used in advertising signs, and would change the appearance of large cities from then on.
For the shake of history, though, at this point we should note that Neon was discovered some years earlier. In 1898, William Ramsey and M.W. Travers made this discovery. The nonreactive type of gas is very rare. The liquification of it can help obtain, and after distillation, put into sealed tubes, electrically discharged thanks to Georged Charles. Amazing!
