Boeing 747 spreads its wings | Techday, February 9th
The Boeing 747 is a wide-body long-range airliner, designed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Its first flight took place on this TECHDAY in history, on February 9th 1969, certified later that year. Very soon it officialy entered the service to spred its wings.
Boeing 747 was the first wide-body aircraft, usually referred to as “Jumbo Jet”. Pan American Airways (Pan Am) wanted an airliner two and a half times the size of the Boeing 707 so as to reduce seat costs. The company, thus, designed and developed the 747 that first took flight on this techday in history.
After 54 years, production of the 747, as scheduled, ended in December 2022. Greatest competition the airliner faced from smaller widebodies, such as the lockheed L-1011, McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and the later MD-11. Later Airbus variants presented competition, such as the A340 and the A380, which surpassed it in size, in operation between 2007 and 2021.
