Apple II began shipping | Techday, June 10th
On this TECHDAY in history, on June 10th 1977, Apple Computer Inc. began shipping of its Apple II computer. The first of a long line of related computers, the original model cost $1,298 and came with 4KB of RAM which could be upgraded to 48KB. It had sound and color graphics, as well as BASIC programming built in which made it easy for people to program with it. Apple II’s were particularly popular in schools and with the release of VisiCalc, this computer became popular in the small business market as well.
The Apple II was also notable for its user-friendly design, with its easy-to-use BASIC programming language and color graphics. It was targeted at both the home and education markets, and was widely used in schools to teach computer programming. Its popularity was a key factor in making personal computers more accessible to the general public.
The Apple II was in production until 1993, and it sold more than 5 million units. It was followed by the Apple II Plus, Apple IIe, and Apple IIgs. Even though it was not the first personal computer, but it was the first one to make it to the mainstream, and it had a big impact on the personal computer industry and it established Apple as one of the leading personal computer manufacturers in the world.
