First Porsche released | Techday, June 8th
The first Porsche, an aluminum prototype built entirely by hand, labeled “No. 1″, was completed on this TECHDAY in history, on June 8th 1948, and was the first to wear the company’s name. Its production had begun during the winter of 1947-48. Dubbed the Type 356, the new car was in the tradition of earlier Porsche-designed race cars like the Cisitalia.
The concept behind the 356 was to create a lightweight and nimble sports car that was both easy to drive and fun to drive, it marked the beginning of the Porsche brand and set the foundation for the company’s future models, such as the 911, which is still in production today.
Beside being the first brand model, the 356 also played an important role in Porsche’s early racing success. The company campaigned in numerous motorsports events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where the Type 356 won its class in 1951. The legacy of the Porsche 356 is not only its design and engineering, but also its contribution to the brand recognition and reputation of the Porsche marque.
