Technology Business merger | 3Com and USRobotics merged | Techday, June 12th
On this TECHDAY in history, on June 12th 1997, the largest merger of networking technology companies, 3Com and USRobotics (USR), was completed. The 8.5 billion dollars deal resulted in the creation of a networking applications giant that stand up to companies like Cisco, although it was aimed more at small businesses and consumers. Following the merger, USR’s division focused on the development of remote access applications and the manufacture of modems, while 3Com took over the networking part (cards, infrastructure and others).
USR was a major consumer brand internationally. It maintained a reputation of high quality services and support of all latest communications standards. On the turn of the century, the company made various acquisitions and ended with the 3Com business merger. It was one of the companies to provide dial-up modems for personal computers. Prior to the development of standards, it offered its on protocol, the HST or High Speed Transfer protocol.
