Microsoft and AT&T alliance for the Internet Explorer | Techday, July 26th
On this TECHDAY in history, on July 26th 1996, Microsoft and AT&T announced an alliance with one another to promote Microsoft’s web browser, Internet Explorer, into the emerging internet business space. This would allow both companies to gain easier entrance in that market.
Microsoft and AT&T would go on to promote and distribute jointly their respective browsers. This deal was AT&T’s way of expanding its long-distance phone service. But it also represented Microsoft’s attempt to get back on the online computing software game and to offset its late entry into it.
The alliance also drew criticism from some quarters, seen as an example of a large corporation using its power and influence to stifle competition. Additionally, some critics argued that the alliance would lead to a lack of innovation in the web browser market. Other companies would be discouraged from developing new browsers in the face of the dominance of Internet Explorer.
Despite these criticisms, the alliance between Microsoft and AT&T was widely considered to be a successful one. Internet Explorer continued to be the most widely used web browser for several years, and the co-branded websites and online services created by Microsoft and AT&T were generally well-received.
