Sinclair Radionics founding | Techday, July 25th
On this TECHDAY in history, on July 25th 1961, Sinclair Radionics was founded. Sir Clive Sinclair’s company was a technology pioneer in the European market, particularly in the minimalism of its devices, from televisions and radios to calculators and computers. From the outset, Sinclair sought to pioneer the miniaturisation of electronic devices.
The company’s initial focus was on developing and marketing electronic devices for personal use, such as the pocket calculator and the digital watch. Sinclair Radionics was also involved in the development of early home computers, including the Sinclair ZX80, ZX81 and ZX Spectrum. The company’s most notable product, however, was the pocket-sized television known as the Microvision, which was launched in 1977.
In the 1980s, the company shifted its focus to more advanced and expensive products, such as the QL home computer and the C5 electric vehicle. However, these products were not well-received by consumers, and the company’s financial troubles led to its eventual decline. In 1986, the company was sold to Amstrad, a UK-based consumer electronics company.
Sir Clive Sinclair continued to innovate and develop new products, even after the sale of Sinclair Radionics, and his work has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including a knighthood in 1983 for his services to British industry.
