On this TECHDAY in history, on August 29th 2003, the Skype communication service was launched in beta (trial) version. Nowadays it is one of the most popular VoIP (Voice over IP) service on the Internet.

Skype quickly gained popularity due to its simplicity and the ability to make free calls between users. It also offered a low-cost option for making calls to landlines and mobile phones. The company was acquired by eBay in 2005 for $2.6 billion and then by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion.
