Birthday of John W. Mauchly | The co-creator of ENIAC | Techday, August 30th
On this TECHDAY in history, on August 30th 1907, John W. Mauchly, the co-creator of Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) was born in Ohio, USA. Mauchly was an electrical engineer and doctor of physics. He was also the mastermind behind history’s first general-purpose computer, which he built in collaboration with John P. Eckert in 1946.
In the early 1940s, Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert began work on the ENIAC. The project was commissioned by the United States Army as a way to calculate ballistics trajectories for artillery shells during World War II. The ENIAC completed in 1945 and was the first computer programmed to solve a wide range of computing problems.
The ENIAC was a major step forward in the development of modern computers, and it paved the way for the development of the first stored-program computers, the UNIVAC and the EDVAC. Mauchly’s work on the ENIAC and his later contributions to computer science were instrumental in the development of the computer industry we know today. Mauchly passed away on January 8, 1980, in Ambler, Pennsylvania, United States.
