On this TECHDAY in history, on November 26th 1894, Norbert Wiener was born. He was a mathematician, philosopher, and the author of the book “Cybernetics: Or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine.” (published in 1948). This work was hugely influential in later research into artificial intelligence. In his book, Wiener drew on World War II experiments with anti-aircraft systems that anticipated the course of enemy planes by taking advantage of radar. He also did extensive analysis of brainwave patterns and explored the similarities between human brains and modern computing machines that are capable of memory association, choice, and decision-making.
Wiener’s ideas had a profound impact on a wide range of fields, including engineering, biology, psychology, and philosophy. His work on feedback systems and the concept of “cybernetic feedback” laid the foundation for the development of modern control systems and the development of the computer.
Wiener’s contributions to the field of cybernetics have been recognized by many awards and honors. He received the National Medal of Science in 1966 and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1974. He passed away on March 18, 1964.
