Rare phenomenon observed | Explosion within the Galaxy MRG-MO138 | SN Requiem

With their publication in the review “Nature Astronomy“, a group of astronomers describes a rare and quite interesting phenomenon.

It concerns a self-destructive explosion of supernova, a star of the Galaxy MRG-MO138. This was detected in the Earth’s celestial dome in 2016, as three different points of light. The Hubble Space Telescope had located these points and this ascertained their source. In a subsequent attempt to observe the light of the explosion, to identify more elements, they found that all three points have disappeared.

NASA publication makes clear that the triple screening of the phenomenon is extremely rare. Usually the explosion of a star in a supernova is visible only once. The phenomenon attributes to the fact that tha star lined up to the center of the cluster, thus visible to the telescope.

The explosion was called “SN Requiem” and as the scientists report, it will return to the celestial dome between the years 2035 โ€“ 2040 with the most likely year in 2037. With predictions made, researchers estimate that even a fourth screening will be possible in around 15 years time.
