Hackers attack 1 million ASUS computers | ShadowHammer attack

Malware was installed on more than one million ASUS computers by exploiting the company’s software upgrade system.

Kaspersky Lab said the attack happened between June and November last year. Malware was delivered through a software upgrade that had a backdoor and gave them access to users’ computers.

“We are not able to estimate the total number of affected users based only on our own data. However, according to our estimates, the actual scope of the problem is very large. They may have affected more than one million users worldwide,” a Kaspersky Lab spokesperson said on the company’s official blog.

Symantec was able to detect the attack as well. Security experts warn that hackers can often find a way to target a large company which means they can also target a large number of victims

More than 57 thousand users installed the tampered ASUS software update, and the hackers targeted a smaller number of victims. Kaspersky Lab notified ASUS on January about the discovered incident and helped them in their investigation.

ShadowHammer attack

ASUS made an update of their ASUS Live Update software to address the “ShadowHammer” attack. The company intends to implement multiple security verification mechanisms so that this does not happen again and also launched the use of a new improved end-to-end encryption mechanism. The company noted that the malware targeted at a specific group of users.

The Advanced Persistent Threat attack only targeted 600 computers, and the malware was to search for computers by MAC address. It seems that no reason has been revealed yet as to why these attacks are targeting a certain subnet of computers
