New virtual reality device | Oculus Quest
Facebook has today announced its new Oculus Quest device, an all-in-one wireless virtual reality headset that will be available soon.
The Oculus Rift, which is worn on the head and comes with two controllers, does not need a computer to work. The VR headset will cost $399 as per Reuters and the BBC.
The company will release 50 games for their new device which is geared towards virtual reality.
Facebook acquired the manufacturer Oculus in 2014 for three billion dollars. It has already released the Oculus Rift device that needs to be connected to a computer, and in May this year it released its headset Oculus GO priced at $199. According to SuperData, more than 289,000 Go devices were sold in the first half of 2018.
Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg admitted last night at an event that the company is behind its stated 2017 goal of one billion people using virtual reality technology. What he said is that they haven’t achieved even 1% of the goal set.
It seems that sales of VR are rather declining with each quarter than growing. “Clearly the VR industry is struggling to take off. This year we expect a 23% drop in sales of such devices,” said analyst Brian Ma of research firm IDC. “The price of the Oculus Quest is impressively low. But if price was the only barrier, then the cheaper Oculus Go would have managed to sell many more units. The biggest problem is the content,” Ma said.
