Sensitive files freely on the internet | Data security on internet
British researchers today revealed that there is a huge problem with data security on the internet and this comes from huge leaks as 1.5 billion sensitive files like bank statements and medical records often ending up circulating freely. There is a mountain of personal documents that are not adequately protected, data equivalent to 12 petabytes, 4,000 times larger than the Panama papers.
Anyone can obtain access to these documents if they have even minimal levels of technical expertise, according to Rick Holland, the vice president of Digital Shadows. He explained how investigators really didn’t have to provide a password in order to access them. This makes the job of cyber hijackers much easier.
“We don’t think enough about our digital footprint and the data that is already publicly accessible,” Digital Shadows insists in its report. Researchers found that about 36% of the documents were from European Union countries. The largest volume for a single country came from the US, at 16%. They found many documents as well from Asia and the Middle East
Though many companies are afraid of cyber-hijacking or industrial espionage, they aren’t aware that a significant amount of sensitive data is already circulating on the internet.
