
Hacker hits major companies worldwide
A British hacker, living in Cyprus, has been sentenced to three years in prison for hacking and paralyzing the Liberian telecommunications company Lonestar.
Aย CNN report detailed this case and showed how one man was able to strike such a powerful blow to the system of this company that the entire Liberia was offline for a year.
A senior official of Cellcom hired Kaye to carry out the cyberattacks. There is no evidence that the company knew anything about this activity. The man pleaded guilty to both charges of creating and using a botnet as well as possession of malware. The hacker sentenced to two years and eight months in jail by a London court on Friday 10 January.
While residing in Cyprus, Kaye created a botnet which targeted Lonestar’s services and caused huge damage for the company. They had to pay about 600 thousand dollars to fix the problems he created. The company incurred losses of tens of millions of dollars over time as customers abandoned ship.
After his arrest in 2017, the skilled hacker extradited to Germany, where he admitted to carrying out cyberattacks against Deutsche Telekom that affected around one million users in 2016.
A spokesman for the British authorities said that Daniel was acting as a highly skilled and competent paid hacker. His actions, he added caused damage to many businesses worldwide, it is demonstrating the fact that cybercrime is an ever-growing issue.
