The invisible talented composer
Amper Music’s unveiling to the public is gradual, so we have yet to see her full potential. Drew Silverstein, her CEO, also mentioned in an interview the following. As the list of new genres of music grows, she will be able to compose them.
If next year’s Best Song Grammy were awarded to 31-year-old American singer Tarin Southern for her new single “Brake Free”, she would take the stage with our entire production team except for music composer Amber. The reason is simple, as Amber is not one.
Recently, there is a new advancement in AI, an invisible composer if you may. Called Amber, it creates original music like a Hollywood composer. “Think about it this way… what Amber is doing might not be innovation. That’s because electronic music has been around since the beginning of computer usage. We believe that Amper heralds a new era in synthesizer design. It can not only understand emotion, but also express it musically to be as human-like as possible. The CEO of Amper Music says: “We think we had a new philosophical and technological approach, to create a machine that not only understands the concept of emotion but can express it musically.
On Amper, users are given four different styles of music to choose from. She askes them then to describe their mood. You push a button on your phone or computer and Amber composes a new original track in only seconds. All the music she creates is completely unique. We do not use loops or copies, the material is always made from scratch. Because of this, every user has permission to use this music wherever they please. They wouldn’t have to go through the licensing process.
Collaboration tool of the invisible composer
One group of people who will be using Amber’s AI are those who need functional music. This sounds like it has less artistic value – but it allows companies and organisations to produce high-quality content that needs listening to. “Creative professionals don’t always have to be musicians, but they usually need music for their projects. Whether it’s a video on the web or ads, dynamic content and music always go together. With Amber, you can get it all as a complete solution. Plus, we save time and resources.”
Drew Silverstein from Amber reaffirms that they’re not trying to replace musicians with machines, but they want to utilize AI to enable more people (including lesser trained professionals) to produce music. In contrast, he points out that professional musicians can use this program to improve their compositions, get ideas, or edit an original composition into its “Pro” version “What makes us human is our desire and ability to create art. What’s precious is the process rather than the end result itself. If you look at a painting and a digital version of it from afar, they may be identical. We give, though, greater value to the original for being crafted with care and skill. Lee thinks that because humans have been creating and appreciating art throughout humanity, this desire will continue as long as civilization exists.
There are several other AI programs on the internet, but Amber was the first to provide music for Tarin Southern’s song. Mr Silverstein avoids revealing much of the technology behind the invisible composer, but he assures us that his team taught it composition and that they give equal priority to the three elements of “composition, performance, production” which are different from what their competitors do.
As with the transition from analogue to digital music, Amber’s technology is the next link in the chain of technological evolution in the music industry. “It’s no secret that computers are getting smarter by the day. There will soon come a time when AI music is indistinguishable from human music in its simplicity. The next question is whether we as musicians and composers can find a way to make sure artificial intelligence is ethical and moral so it’s productive for humanity instead of being a source of destruction.”
