Android has taken the number one spot from Windows for the first time according to StatCounter.
It might seem to some that Google’s operating system has been surpassing Windows’ in usage, with StatCounter reporting 37.93% of the worlds operating systems used Google compared to 37.91% for Windows in March 2017.
“I think most importantly it illustrates just how far Android has come,” he said. “5 years ago, they had a share of only around 2.4%”
The rise of internet access through mobile phones has been seen as one of the largest reasons behind this shift. The decline in personal computers & the increased focus on Asia are also often considered contributing factors.
The Windows Phone OS is more popular than either Apple’s iOS or Android on smartphones in North America.
Android currently dominates Asia in terms of users, with 52.2% compared to 29.2% for Windows. This means that there will be an overall increase in Android’s market share globally since the majority of Asia are using it and the next most populous continent on Earth is struggling with its systems, preventing any major power from knocking it out from its top spot over there.
