The IC industry is evolving fast and this is evident in Intel’s future plans.
Intel plans to pack in 100 million transistors per square millimeter. This is so as to give their CPU the power they need to outperform competitors. More people are demanding faster and more powerful computers. This measure is really going to give a competitive edge over our competitors. The Intel event is the perfect example of how they not only abide by Moore’s Law, but even try to surpass it. The theory says that every two years we would keep doubling the number of transistors in an integrated circuit.
Intel stresses that it relies on the method of hyperscaling for the development of its CPU chips. The company, thus, predicts that with the implementation of its 10-nanometer architecture, the cost of integrated circuits will drop significantly. Intel will continue to use the process of high-scale manufacturing for its integrated circuits. This will allow them to predict that with the introduction of the 10-nanometer architecture, the cost of manufacturing ICs should drop substantially. This is the architecture that Intel is trying to implement for an IC with a large number of transistors.
Intel recently announced that they’re going to be updating their technology in October 2017, so I think it’s time to change the processor. A Kaby Lake Intel Core i5-7600K based on 14-nanometer architecture is currently capable of fitting 37.5 million transistors–that’s a lot of power!
