CEOs of Big Tech giants testify
A US House of Representatives investigation made public yesterday may require some big tech CEOs to testify for an ivestigation’s purposes. Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook will testify befor the House Committe about their company’s competition in the online market. It could be a learning experience for them and help improve their relationship with the US government. Apple, Alphabet, Amazon and Facebook are reportedly asked to give a response in July as to whether their CEOs will provide testimony in the investigation.
While on the surface it may seem voluntary, using such language in your evergreen to-do list may leave you vulnerable to legal action. CEOs should be aware of their legal obligations. The House of Representatives has announced that it plans to conduct certain investigations for competition purposes. Such an investigation would focus on whether internet companies have complied with previous directives from the competition authority.
Yesterday, Amazon announced that Jeff Bezos would like to testify before the committee. The issues involved are related to “the timing, format, production of documents, all determined by the extraordinary circumstances brought on by the pandemic.”
It will be a historical moment. For the first time CEOs of Big Tech giants testify alongside on another before the Congress.
