Video streaming begins to transform a lot of aspects of the entertainment industry. The transformation involves video games now too, as Google’s new platform, Stadia launched on November 19th. Using a platform that relies on Google’s computing centers to “run” games, the new platform prevents the need for special game consoles. Stadia users can play on any device that is connected to the internet – including smartphones and computers. A special app for smartphones allows you to use Google Chromecast or a TV.

Google isn’t the only company to believe streaming video gaming will change the international market for video games. The Economist claims that billions of dollars are at stake, but how high-quality streaming is going to affect that market remains to be seen until it becomes more prevalent around the world. Microsoft has announced new games for its xCloud service, which will officially launch in 2020. This comes alongside their existing Xbox Game Pass subscription, video game streaming services are becoming more popular, and they allow you to “download” games. Amazon is working on something similar, while Nvidia is testing GeForce Now (an alternative way to play), and Sony already has Playstation Now, a service that offers over 800 video games.

Stadia, which require a good internet connection of at least 10Mbps, will have 22 video games available, including Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Destiny 2 and Mortal Combat 11. They are also looking to bring in NBA 2K20 with their Overwatch League participation. 4K streaming will be provided through Stadia Pro for a monthly subscription of $9.99.
