
Kaspersky Lab has launched an event called ึฝ The Great in P. The Lab’s aims were various. Firstly, the company wanted to demonstrate how the brightest minds in the industry of cyber-security solve the toughest digital puzzles. Accordingly, they wanted to encourage others to join them on their journeys. With the growth in the use of new technologies and cyber-threats, consumers are more sensitive to these matters. It has never been a better time to be a security expert. By 2020 we’ll be short 1.8 million workers in the tech industry. Millennials have been extremely slow to move into that field, yet demand for digital security professionals is growing.ย Kaspersky Lab is launching a new initiative that helps to address this challenge. It hopes to open up the public’s perspectives on the career and lives of GReaT team members by highlighting some of their most important insights.
The research and analysis that the Global Research and Analysis Group does are integral to Kaspersky Lab’s success. They provide both new technologies used by security experts online to analyze the most sophisticated digital threats and protection solutions for business users around the world.ย The team has 42 members who work worldwide. They’re based across 6 different regions: Europe, Russia, Asia, the Middle East and America.
It’s been quite a while since the GReAT team has been able to uncover some of the most important targeted attacks that have ever been found, including Miniduke, Flame, Equation, Red October, Duqu 2.0, CozyDuke and ProjectSauron. These types of attacks are costly and can take months of development to prepare. They’ve been a target because they’re government, military, scientific, commercial, or industrial. Organizations targeted with these types of attacks could also be research institutes or even you personally! It doesn’t make these organizations safe from any cyberattack!
There are many types of digital criminals and it can be hard to keep track of their actions. While physical crime is mainly motivated by greed, intent to cause harm, or a political motivation for exploitation, cybercrime is much more difficult to track because the actors range from individuals committing crimes for criminal gain, state-sponsored attacks like that on Estonia’s government institutions in 2007. With more and more financial institutions identified as vulnerable, campaigns happened all over the world. These campaigns led to a number of high profile escapes that were happening at the same time, with many going unreported.ย There’s always a lot of unknown attacks taking place. The predators never stop and threat hunters have to be on their game 24/7 to keep up with the deluge and share their findings with the world.
GReAT experts are currently monitoring over a hundred threat actors, and between 80-100 counties that are experiencing malicious attacks. The company’s experts conducted research which led to the creation of reports that help organizations “hunt” malware. The data collected from these reports provides them with forensic information.
Several of the digital security investigations undertaken by Kaspersky Lab turned into joint operations between GReAT and global organisations such as INTERPOL and Europol, national and regional police authorities such as the City of London Police and the National High Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) of the Dutch Police Service, and assisted several global teams such as Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs). During the investigation, our investigators shared their technical expertise in malware analysis, malware management support and infrastructure and exploitation method testing.
