Epic announced new Unreal Engine 5
Today is an important day for Epic Games because they are announcing the release of Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) and you can now download it. The game engine offers a lot more feature and benefits than previous products, so you might want to check it out now. Developers have taken advantage of a handful of photorealistic technologies to create a more immersive game experience. These improvements allow for a high level of performance and the updated UI brings about increased user-friendliness.
In addition to giving users the ability to create games and experiences with massive amounts of geometric detail, Lumen also allows for more true-to-life lighting. This can be useful in a variety of settings and scenarios – including film, architectural modeling or even medical simulations. There are also more practical tools, like the ability to partition off sections of an open world to make it easier for teams to work on areas independently. “This is the first time the engine is available widely for game developers.” UE5 and other games released to the public, eschew royalties for the user base. This is a good thing because you can get your hands on these new releases much sooner than if only big companies could use it, and in some cases you even don’t need to pay!
Games showcase
Earlier this year, the Fortnite in-game development platform was upgraded to Unreal 5. At the same time, Epic released The Matrix Awakens, a tech demo merging Keanu Reeves with Carrie-Anne Moss. It also showcased their larger open world that’s inhabited by many of their developers. “We’ve found that it’s very valuable for our customers, as we can test and experiment with the user experience before releasing, which saves people time and frustration,” says Kim Libreri, CTO of Epic Games. “Epic does not want to coast on old ideas, so it’s a big plus.”
Epic is also making a sample of the Matrix’s city available for game developers to build off of. “That sounds incredible,” founder Tim Libreri says.Epic is launching a multiplayer shooter built in UE4. It draws inspiration from UT and has the potential to be a useful tutorial for game developers. It’s been a long time since games started to use movie quality assets on the consoles and then had to scale them down for use in a smaller game. But now that there are new consoles on the market with powerful hardware, games like Fortnite absolutely require this type of level of quality for everything to run smoothly.
These were some excited news for the gaming community. You can find more stories on Epic Games here or here.
