“Facebook cleaners”

“Facebook cleaners” check millions of videos and photos daily to ensure Facebook remains safe from inappropriate content.

A Facebook cleaner spoke to the BBC, which is typical testimony of a worker from Manila in the Philippines: ‘I have seen hundreds of beheadings’. “In Manila hundreds of workers engage in this very thing. Not coming across this kind of material”, one of the managers of the “cleaners” tells the British network. “It’s really a hidden industry in the Philippines. There are a lot of companies working for the big social networks we know, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc. They monitor all the images and videos flagged as suspicious by an algorithm or reported by users,” he explains.

“If you make one mistake you can ruin more than one life. This can trigger a war, bullying or even kill a person,” says one “cleaner”.

A big problem that Facebook “Cleaners” face is that they work 8-10 hours a day and see all types of harsh material, such as child abuse, terrorist videos, beheadings. “I was forced to watch child sexual abuse. It was something unforgivable for me. I went straight to my head and told him I can’t go on any longer,” reveals a “cleaner”. She was told that this is her job and she signed a contract when she started working there.
