Fabric fiber with digital capabilities | AI component sets new Artificial Intelligence possibilities
Researchers from MIT, led by Professor of Materials Science and Electrical Engineering Joel Fink, and involving 2 Greek researchers as well, have created the first fabric fiber that has the ability to store music or video files and analyse data when woven into a garment. This on-body artificial intelligence will take innovation into another level. This AI component will further increase the fiber possibilities. A small external device will control this smart fiber. It will comprise of a neural network of 1.650 connections.
With the contribution of artificial intelligence, digital threads contain computational memory, heat sensors and programmability.
Until now, electronic fibers have been analogue rather than digital. The new fiber was created from hundreds of tiny digital silicon ‘chips’, which together formed a polymer fiber. The fiber is very thin and flexible, capable of being passed through a needle and sewn into a fabric, as well as being washed at least ten times without damage.
