The FlyCroTug drone | Swiss research project
The FlyCroTug is a small Swiss-US drone that can carry a load much heavier than itself and overcome obstacles like doors.
It has a special attachment mechanism. This allows it to both lift and carry objects up to 40 times heavier than the drone and attach itself to surfaces. Two FlyCroTug robots can work together and jointly fly a “lasso” at a handle, and lift it open.
Mark Katkoski and Dario Floreano of the School of Engineering at Stanford and EPFL designed and developed the robot. The team later on presented the project in the robotics journal Science.
FlyCroTug is small enough to access places that are hard for heavier drones to reach. This makes them ideal for situations where you need assistance and can’t access it. This would make them very useful in cases where people have been caught up and at the mercy of natural hazards.
The US military has heavily invested in this research project.
Researches have already been conducted on the drone. Continue reading. Gather more information on first research results by following the link.
