
A total of 250 companies have stopped advertising on Google’s platforms due to the adverse effects of ads ending up next to inappropriate content.
More companies are leaving Google due to their embracing of extremist and inappropriate content. YouTube is just one example of that.
After L’Oreal, the BBC, HSBC, Audi, Volkswagen, the Guardian and Toyota. Mac Donald’s and Domino’s have also gone on strike from Google AdSense. The paid advertising space on the website coexists with videos, texts and general material that contain offensive content
At least 250 companies have halted their Google campaigns
“We are deeply concerned that our ads may have appeared on YouTube in videos promoting terrorism and hate,” AT and T said. “Until Google can ensure this does not happen again, we have removed our ads from its search platforms.”
Alphabet Inc revealed that it would work on its policies and guidelines to deal with the demands from other companies, and ensure the appropriateness of content on its platforms
Google Europe’s Matt Brittin apologised publicly at the European Advertising Week. “I want to start by apologising,” he said. “When this happens, we take responsibility.”
As told to the Financial Times, Brittin said that “Google’s tools and policies work well in a majority of cases.” However, he added that “we need to get better. We are putting together a report on how we can improve and speed up our efforts.”
Google has promised to make some changes to AdWords so that the boycott against it gets resolved.
YouTube has clarified its policies on the type of content that will not be tolerated and will be removed. The revisions are also supposed to apply stricter standards towards videos that violate YouTube’s community guidelines, such as those inciting violence.
“We’ve conducted a thorough review of our advertising policy, and are going to take steps that’ll allow advertisers more control over where their ads appear. “We are making it harder for advertisers to violate our policies,” the company said in an online statement.
It is noted here that shortly after these announcements, Twitter disclosed that since 2015 to date the company has shut down a total of more than 636,000 accounts due to posts promoting violent extremism.
