After the Second World War, Lockheed Martin built a small research facility. Engineer Kelly Johnson had to work by force inside a tent next to the company’s main factory and research lab. That happened despite the utmost importance of his work.
It was within this tiny space that the first US jet fighter was designed and built in just 143 days. In doing so, it set a precedent for exampling operations of other secret technology labs.
It wasn’t the first, but it’s one of the first examples of what innovation can do in this industry. In a small town, they were able to make an impact by following through on their ideas.
Innovation has often come from the workforce and not just from corporate labs. These days, executives have been teaching important lessons about leadership and culture to their employees by example. While many of them have become famous in the world, companies these days are moving away from experimental scientific laboratories because of the new business model. They prefer to spend their money on more practical projects. Still, some researchers enjoy the ultimate privilege of following a different model. They can set up their own labs, laboring in solitude to invent something that most people will never see.
These are the places where many of the country’s most accomplished engineers and scientists work. They have time, money, mobility and freedom to explore their full potential. This is also a great opportunity for them to take an early lead in this competitive industry.
Secret laboratory goals are never the same. Some want to change the world, others focus on innovation, and others have different agendas entirely.
According to recent research, the US has only one great corporate lab left: Google’s X facility. Founded in 2010, the X lab is home to cutting-edge research and Google’s boldest attempts at improving life as we know it. This is where huge actual funds end up, which researchers use for all sorts of scientific madness: from ‘lunar technologies’, i.e. inapplicable cutting-edge research. More practical things such as Google’s self-driving vehicle. The unique Google Glasses or the high-altitude balloons that carry the internet around the globe!
Former head of the secret research facility, Astro Teller, said “Anything that poses a big problem for humanity, we’ll deal with it. As long as we can figure out how to fix it!”
Google X employs independent research teams that are looking into more than 100 different projects. This includes developing web technologies and automating tasks performed by humans at work.
All of these ideas sound like a long shot, but they’re making it work.

Telstra, the Australian telecommunications provider, has a secret research facility in New South Wales.
It’s insulated to avoid any outside interference and has equipment for cutting-edge telecommunications research.
Telstra has 2 rooms. The first of which is bursting with tech that helps them control environmental factors like temperature and humidity. There are also a lot of ventilation ducts to minimize interference and another room with carbon cones that do the same thing for all local external interference. In a quest to make sure there are never “too many” factors between us and that perfect device. One of the key factors we look at is protocols, performance, signal sensitivity and a whole bunch of others.
Telstra Lab has been around since 1983 and began working on mobile devices as early as 1993. A few years ago, they tested a range of new products and did more than 200 updates on apps and programs.
The work done here is pivotal for the provider, as every mistake can cost them money. One such mistake in March 2016 led to 8 million subscribers to be disconnected! The lab was able to make up for their error with a new wireless device that came out as a result of their innovation.
IKEA’s Space 10 is located in Copenhagen’s meat market district and houses IKEA’s research facility. The laboratory gives a view into the brand’s innovative products. Space 10 is a creative space that offers a chance for original ideas to see the light of day.
The IKEA lab is home to some incredibly innovative ideas and experiments.
They’re also taking on some strange projects, like 3-D printing meat and trying out seaweed plantations. This certainly isn’t your average furniture company, but it’s one worth investing in nonetheless.
Space10 has developed some interesting 3D technologies that will change food production. They can produce foods from seaweed, beets and even insects which can be rich in nutrients ανδ provide perspective on a plant-based diet. In this space, other projects are exploring hydroponic crops, water-conserving technologies and innovative recycling tools.
As we’ve mentioned, Lockheed has a history of allowing smaller research labs to operate independently. For example with their company’s main secret research facility. They’re set up to do just one project and they operate and act completely independently from the main lab. It was the first of its kind in what would become a new standard in the tech industry. The Google facility continues to keep its secrets strong, but it has led the way for many other facilities that are more open. After sneaking inside, reporters were only allowed to explore limited areas as they tried to avoid the noise of the executives’ conversations on the walls.
