Chrome Web Store apps end

Google announced the closure of standalone Chrome Apps back in August 2016. This was the first step in a series of other changes that would eventually lead to the complete dismissal of standalone apps within Google. Until now, Chrome has been the best browser you can use because of its capability to prevent websites and apps from running on it. But today, there is an interface change that allows these same sites to run on the browser. The reason for this is because Google Chrome no longer supports the Web Store framework.

Starting in Q1 2018, even apps that are already installed in Internet browsers will cease to work. This new change is exclusive to Windows and macOS users, as Chrome. Any extensions or themes you liked will still work as usual.

The elimination of a single feature may be the beginning of a new direction for desktop developers. Therefore, it will be exciting to see what the future holds. In the article about Progressive Web Apps, we saw how they’re blurring the line between apps and websites and that they bring a lot of capabilities from apps to websites. Reports suggest the first such apps will be available on the Chrome desktop in the second quarter of 2018.
