
€4.34 billion fine for Google
The E.U accused Alphabet Inc of illegally strengthening its advantage in the mobile sector since 2011 by forcing Android device manufacturers to pre-install Google Search and the Chrome browser along with the Google Play app store, forcing them to pay only for Google Search and excluding them from using modified versions of Android.
“We have filed our appeal of the EU’s Android decision with the General Court of the European Union,” Google stressed in an email.
Earlier it had said it would take the case to the EU’s second highest court, based in Luxembourg. Cited CEO Sundar Pichai’s arguments on the day of the EU ruling in July, which include that Android provided consumers with more choice.
It may take some time before the judges make a final decision on this case. It is likely the Court of Justice of the European Union will hear a final appeal but only on a legal issue.
