The second phase of the assignment of domain names ending in .ελ started on October 10.
During this stage, all domain names ending in .ελ, not reserved during the previous period, will be available for assignment to anyone. There’s no special restrictions with regards to what name you can use.
Since the first day of operation, over 7,635 .eλ domain names have been assigned. As for the .ελ domain name registration procedure, more information are available on the EETT website.
.ελ is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Greece. First introduced in 2005, the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (ICS-FORTH) managed the domain.
In 2018, the registration of .ελ domain names was open to any individual or organization, regardless of their location. Registrations were in the process on a first-come, first-served basis, and domain names could be registered for a period of one to ten years.
To register a .ελ domain name, individuals or organizations had to meet certain technical and administrative requirements set by ICS-FORTH. They also had to have a valid Greek VAT number or a Greek corporate registration number.
The introduction of .ελ domain names in 2018 aimed at promoting the use of the Greek language on the internet, particularly in the domain name system. This is part of the broader effort to promote the use of the Greek language in digital communication. It would pave the way to strengthen the country’s digital identity.
