Greece’s exascale supercomputer
Greece became the 12th country to sign the European Union’s Declaration on High-Performance Computing (HPC). The country now joins the EU’s effort to develop the next generation of information and data infrastructure. By 2022-2023, Europe hopes to have operational exa-scale supercomputers in the top three of the global ranking.
HPC systems are actually rapidly growing because they can perform more than 10 15 calculations per second on one system. It’s expected that by the year 2020 they’ll reach “petascale” processors. They are in the range of 10 16 calculations per second 10 18 calculations per second. This computing power is similar to that of all mobile phones.
Today, the EU is a world leader in the use of HPC applications. The Union, though, has no computer in the top ten worldwide. The declaration, which was presented in March 2017, was signed by the Deputy Minister of Research, Kostas Fotakis on 10 November in Athens.
Complying Countries
So far, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and Spain had signed the declaration.
The signatories on the Declaration commit to work together so as to establish a world-class high-performance computing “ecosystem”. They will acheive this by acquiring and operating the world’s best supercomputers, as well as building their own core equipment and software tools for use.
Powerful computers will play a vital role in the development of new medicines as well as in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, in neuroscience and in unlocking the secrets of the brain and mind. They’ll be able to predict climate change, space observation and so much more AI writers help edit & implement new business documents, like policies, procedures and software.
The European Commission is joining forces with the signatory countries of the Declaration to release a “roadmap” for the implementation of new European supercomputer before end-2017.
