Drop in smartphone sales

For the first time in seven years, Samsung and Apple were not the top two smartphone sales. Huawei took the second spot in Q2 of 2018 by surpassing Apple. In the third quarter of 2018, the Chinese company again displaced its American counterpart for the second consecutive time.

Smartphone makers sold a total of 355.2 million units worldwide in the third quarter of 2018, down from 377.8 million units in the same quarter of 2017

The top five manufacturers in terms of sales are:

  1. Samsung with 72.2 million units

  2. Huawei with 52.0 million units

  3. Apple with 46.9 million units

  4. Xiaomi with 34.3 million units

  5. Oppo with 29.9 million units

  6. And all the rest sold a total of 119.9 million units

Samsung sold 11.1 million fewer smartphones but still managed to maintain a 22.1% market share. The Galaxy Note9 was unable to regain the lost torch of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

In contrast to the previous quarter where it accounted for 14.6% market share, Huawei managed to increase its sales by 4.2 percentage points in their newest fiscal year. Huawei experienced strong demand for their P20 and P20 Pro models, leading to increased sales.

Meanwhile, its market share for Apple has increased by 0.8 points, from 12.4% to 13.2%. This is due to the iPhone XS, which people are loving.

There was a significant drop in companies outside of the top five and the overall loss was 5.8%.
