Windows Phone has seen lackluster sales for a while now. Some people have used it as an opportunity to profit from this fact by spreading the “secret” of Windows Phone’s unsuccessfulness which suggests that the platform is dead. Microsoft have not admitted this publicly but there is good news for Windows Phone users today; the head of Microsoft’s mobile division announced plans for what the company.
Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice President of Windows at Microsoft, used Twitter to talk about Windows 10 Mobile. He sent out a series of tweets in which he basically said that Microsoft is not going to invest in the mobile OS and will only work on security updates and bug fixes for Windows-powered devices, mainly for large enterprises that have already switched over to Windows Phone.
Microsoft won’t bother with updates that add new features and plans to mostly focus on bug fixes. There are no new smartphones on the horizon but the company does plan to upgrade Windows 10. It seems Joe Belfiore has turned to a different platform because there are more apps & more variety in phones.
Windows Phone has seen a steady decline in usage, so Microsoft opted to stop investing in it and focus on apps instead. The lack of third-party app support was the main reason behind the decision. Even with Microsoft’s offer to pay and build apps for other companies’ platforms, Microsoft never got on the same level as Apple or Google when it came to app promotion. This had a negative effect on the company and is less popular amongst users.
Microsoft is focusing on app development for mobile operating systems like iOS and Android, something they already have experience with. For example, a few days ago they announced plans to bring the Edge browser to iOS and Android smartphones.
Microsoft doesn’t plan to stop supporting you too soon. Even if you’re invested in Windows but using a supported Lumia phone with Windows 10 Mobile,. However, the platform is still small in comparison to Android and iOS market shares. Users should prepare themselves to switch sooner rather than later. Reports have indicated that Microsoft is developing a new mobile device, codenamed Andromeda. People are speculating that it might run the new “Windows Core OS” platform, which is based on Windows 10.
