Jack Dorsey on editing in Twitter

Twitter users want the ability to edit their posts in case they make a mistake, have incorrect spelling or change their mind later on. A lot of them are content with a small window of time after they look it over. Twitter has been positive on the idea of editing since 2016, admitting that some form of editing is definitely needed.

But times seem to be changing and seeing a red “edit” button is not likely. It has been several years since Twitter launched and its initial text-only feature was its main attribute. Social media companies like across the street are becoming more prevalent on top-tier business markets. Jack Dorsey says in a recent Q & A that “we’ll probably never do it.”

Twitter is an effective and efficient tool for creating content. It’s possible to access content of all types, at any time, in a hassle-free manner. It is great for public archiving and being able to see the impact that one post can have on an audience. He thinks this will only make things worse in some respects though.

You can tweet something and get it retweeted. Even if you change the content later, it won’t make a difference because other people will have re-tweeted that original tweet by that point. The one who re-tweeted the original tweet will now also retweets and relay something completely different as well.

If we set a one-minute deadline for editing a tweet, that means we’ll need to be really quick with it because once it’s out people are responsive.
