A store without a cash register

A store without a cash register and no checkout

Lenovo recently opened their first store in Beijing that doesn’t have a traditional checkout counter. They’re following in Alibaba’s footsteps, who was one of the first big companies to completely remove cash registers from their stores.

Shoppers can enter the Lenovo Lecoo Unmanned Store and receive greetings by a tablet with a camera, which links up to their profile. They can quickly spot their desired products on the shelf ,pre-planted with product labels, grab their purchases and leave. They’ll be charged automatically and won’t need to wait for a cashier, so there’s no need for queuing.

Lenovo is primarily famous for making computers and smart devices like mobile phones. Lecoo, though, mainly dedicates to selling food and snacks. According to analysts, this will serve as an ideal testing ground for facial recognition and other technologies.

The Lenovo Lecoo Unmanned Store located at the company’s technology park in Beijing may be just what Lenovo has been looking for to help with future innovation. According to Vice President of Research and Technology, Daryl Cromer, the company can learn “everything” from this particular test “Shopping at this particular store is extremely simple. You simply walk through the door, the cameras recognize your face. You then browse through the shelves, choose the products you want and then simply walk out of the shop with them. Meanwhile, you settle your account automatically via mobile payment,” Lenovo explains.
