Malware infected 2.27 million devices

Malware infected 2.27 million devices

There have been 2 million people who have unwittingly downloaded malware on their devices after using a file management tool. However, this situation was brought under control before anyone had made any use of the malicious content.

It’s a computer or mobile phone cleaner that has been widely used by many. Piriform – the company behind CCleaner, Piriform have confirmed that there was a cyber incident between August 15 and September 12, which led to illegal tampering of the most recent version of their program.

During and after installing the v5.33.6162 update for the software, users without noticing were then automatically installing Trojan malware.Β  Hackers had added to the download package. The non-sensitive data of the users that were stolen by cybercriminals included things like computer name, IP addresses, list of installed programs and active programs on the devices.

“We are conducting a full and thorough investigation to fully understand these circumstances. At this stage, we don’t want to speculate on how this illegal code got into CCleaner, where the attack originated, how long it took to prepare and who is behind this.”

As investigations show, the virus which infected 2.27 million devices was disabled before anything serious happened to anyone.

You can now download the Piriform Cleaner in a safe form on our site, following a discovery by Cisco’s Talos Research team. They notified us on September 13th, just one day after the regular update and clean program became available to download. Talos recommends that you reset your system to a date before August 15th as a precaution.
